Applying for a Substitute Certificate

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER CANDIDATE
Instructions if you do not have a teaching certificate or substitute certificate.

To prepare, you will need your criminal background check (fingerprinting), as well as your college transcripts, which should be sent directly to the NJ Department of Education via the NJ CERT portal. 

Step 1
Obtain your criminal background check approval letter.

To do so, please visit the NJ Department of Education, Office of Student Protection. Please select the best option based on your previous background.

There are three options to choose from:

  1. New Applicant: If you have never been fingerprinted for the NJ Department of Education
  2. Archived: If you have previously been fingerprinted but it has been longer than 1 year.
  3. Transfer: If you have been fingerprinted for substitute teacher, you may transfer your prints.
      Select the option that best describes your background.

You will need the following information:
Demarest’s contributor’s code is 031070.
The reason for fingerprinting is Substitute Teacher
 
Step 2
Create an account and apply online https://njedcert.force.com for the substitute credential and pay the $125.00 application fee.

  1. Category: Credential
  2. Endorsement Title: select Instructional Substitute (60-Credit) or (30-Credit) see website for details
  3. Upload a PDF of your approved criminal history report.
  4. You will be asked to obtain your college transcripts showing 60 credits or 30 credits (with stipulations).  See website for further information.

Step 3
Once you have your substitute certification, please visit our website under Board of Education>Employment and fill out our substitute application. After reviewing your application in Frontline, an administrator will contact you for a short interview.

Step 4
If you have been recommended to sub in our district, the Principal will give you a packet for further onboarding material.

Applying to Substitute (Already Hold Sub Certification)

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER CANDIDATE WITH PROPER CREDENTIALS
Instructions if you already have a substitute teacher certification or teaching certification and would like to be a substitute teacher.

Step 1
Once you have your substitute certification, please visit our website under Board of Education>Employment and fill out our substitute application. After reviewing your application in Frontline, an administrator will contact you for a short interview.
 
Step 2
If you have been recommended to sub in our district, the Principal will give you a packet for further onboarding material.

Step 3
Once you submit the entire packet to Debra Rinaldi, your name will be recommended to the Demarest Board of Education for approval.
